Black Eyed Beans Curry | Alasande kalu gojju

Black eyed beans is so rich in nutrition and this curry is a traditional recipe of Karnataka ( a South Indian State). It is a great way to add this beans to your weekly food menu. Look for the Nutrition facts below you will be amazed!

Ingredients:

1 Cup Black Eyed Beans

1 Cup Coriander Leaves/ Cilantro

2 Green Chillies

4 Garlic Pods

1 tsp Cumin Seeds

1 Medium Onion

½ tsp Salt

½ Lemon

2 tsp Oil

3 Cups Water

Method:

  1. Soak Black eyed beans for 3-4 hours and pressure cook for 2 whistles or until soft in a pan (20-30 minutes).
  2. Finely chop onions and grind coriander leaves along with cumin, garlic and green chillies.
  3. Heat oil in a pan, add onions and fry until the color changes to golden brown.
  4. Add the ground paste and fry until the raw smell goes off for about a minute.
  5. Add in the cooked Black eyes beans, water and cook over medium flame for 5 minutes.
  6. Give a generous squeeze of lemon and serve with bread, roti or tortilla.

Notes:

  1. This curry will dry out as it cools so adjust the consistency accordingly.
  2. The original recipe does not call for lemon juice but adding it gives the dish so much freshness.
