Broken Wheat Upma| Wheat Rava Upma

1 cup Broken Wheat

2.5  cups water

5-6 Shallots

½ tsp Ginger

1 tsp Mustard Seeds

1 tsp Channa Dhall

8 Whole Cashews

1/4 cup Raisins

2 Red Chillies

1 Sprig Curry Leaves

1 tsp coconut oil

¼ tsp salt


  1. Roast Broken Wheat in slow flame for 5 minutes until the color starts changing to light brown.
  2. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat, add the mustard seeds, once it starts to crackle, add channa dhall, cashews and fry until the color changes to slight brown.
  3. Add the curry leaves, ginger, shallots and fry for a minute.
  4. Add water, salt and let it boil. Once it starts boiling add the broken rava and cook for 2 minutes over medium heat and 5 minutes covered in low heat.
  5. Garnish with raisins. Serve hot with a sprinkle of jaggery, sugar or with a side of coconut chutney.

  1. If your wheat rava is very fine just add water in the ratio of 1:2.
  2. Vegetables like carrot, beans, peas can be added to make it more rich in nutrition. If so add 1/2 cup of water for every one cup of vegetable added.
